Garden Themes

These are suggested themes for the sub-gardens of our project.

Throughout the garden, special view points will be identified, and gathering places (patios or gazebos) will be provided for group meetings, picnicking, chess games or relaxation. Seating, water features, garden art and sculptures will be strategically located and displayed throughout the garden.

  • Entry Garden: The Entry Garden will amaze visitors with some of the most bizarre flora of the plant world.
  • Welcome Garden: This Garden will be build around a thirty foot Obelisk which is anchored in natural rock formations. It shall also feature a small babbling brook cascading down into a placid pond. This garden will feature a selection of some of the more interesting plants found in the other gardens.
  • Ceremonial Garden: This garden is intended to be an intimate public space of multi-tiered lawns providing optimal viewing of events, outdoor classes, children’s story hour, and weddings.
  • Children’s Garden: The Children’s Garden will include interactive water elements, gongs, bubble machines, a maze, and abstract climbing sculptures.
  • Labyrinth (Maze): Recreating the classic Cretan Labyrinth that dates back to 1200 B.C., the Labyrinth will be constructed of decomposing granite paths enclosed by planted earthen mounds.
  • Sensory Garden: The Sensory Garden will give the physically challenged a way to experience the garden with interpretive signage and safe access to plants selected for their unique textures and aromas.
  • Secret Garden: The Secret Garden will be a very unique and exciting place. The theme is under consideration and when announced will generate community enthusiasm. 
  • Jungle Garden: The Jungle Garden will include a stream, waterfalls, a lake and fern grotto surrounded by magnificent tropical trees and palms.
  • Subtropical Garden: The Subtropical Garden will feature many of the beautiful and colorful plants that create a tropical garden feel yet thrive in North County.
  • ‘Down Under Garden’ We are proud to announce that we are hard at work designing and laying the foundations for a new garden themed on the plants native to Australia, New Zealand and Norfolk Island. This garden shall be located adjacent to the Garden House to the south of its’ entry.
  • Arid Garden: The Arid Garden will feature Palms from arid regions; Cacti and Succulents, dry climate trees and flowering shrubs; Protea from South Africa and Australian plants as well as many other wonders appropriate in an arid climate.
  • Grass Garden: The Grass Garden will feature an exquisite variety of textures and colors created by this family of plants that also include the bamboos of the world.
  • Japanese Garden: Created to be a serene environment suggestive of peace and tranquility. It will surround a placid pond fed by a stream which courses down from the Garden headquarters. 
  • Mediterranean Garden: This Garden shall feature plants native to the Mediterranean Region which is very similar to the ecosystem of San Diego County.
  • Herb Garden: It shall feature a wide variety of plants that are used to spice up our foods and a section dedicated to the many medicinal herbs utilized to cure our ills.
  • Unusual Fruit Garden: Fruit comes in many varieties that are unusual and in some cases amazing. This garden will focus on displaying and educating our community about the wide variety of choices available to us.
  • Conservatory-Passive Solar: Created to house and display the most sensitive and rare plants in our collection.
  • Butterfly Garden: A perennial garden designed to attract butterflies and educate the community about the vital role that this colorful insect plays in our ecosystem.
  • Prehistoric Garden: Dedicated to Cycads and large Conifers as well as the trees and plants that has populated this planet since the dawn of time,
  • Human Sundial: A Celestine clock where visitors may tell the time by positioning themselves at the center of the ‘clock’.
  • Garden Headquarters and Library: Located at the peak of the Garden, this space will be utilized as the core of our educational program where classes may be held when inclement weather prohibits the use of the nearby Ceremonial Garden.
