We are surrounded by nature, and plants play no small role in its composition. The human food chain starts with plants, also called autotrophs.

It is no surprise that humans have dedicated years of their lives studying this producer of energy and healing power.

People who specialize in the scientific study of plants are called botanists. Botany is a branch of science that studies plants’ physiology, anatomy (structure), genetics, ecology, distribution, classification, and economic importance.

History of botany

Human interest in the study of plants dates as far back as the stone age. According to the Harvard University Faculty of Art and Sciences, the interest of the early men in botany may have been to gather knowledge about the healing power of plants and those to avoid eating.

This is evident in the early classification of plants as edible and inedible. There is evidence of written manuals on herbs in medicine from 3000 BC in Mesopotamian and China.

Likewise, the Egyptians also wrote about the medicinal uses of plants. However, the earliest written botanical information today is traced to the Greeks.

A Greek philosopher, Theophrastus, who first studied with Plato and then became a disciple of Aristotle, is considered by some as the father of botany.

What is the job of a botanist?

The job of a botanist exceeds studying the plant alone. A botanist studies the plant in relation to other organisms and the environment.

A botanist may specialize in identifying the different species of a particular plant. Another may be interested in how a plant grows under different conditions.

Overall, a botanist can specialize in either pure botany or applied botany.

The steps to become a botanist

High school education

There are specific courses that one must take in high school to graduate. It is possible to be intentional with the choice of selected courses such that they would be the ones that prepare for a career in botany.

In addition to the required courses, subjects like chemistry, physics, biology, and other science-related courses are a good starting point for a career in botany. 

Bachelor’s degree

A bachelor’s degree is usually required to work as a botanist. There are lots of colleges and universities offering admission to botany.

Some might not offer botany as a major but has courses related to it, such as ecology, biology, plant science, and environmental science.

Master’s degree

A Master’s degree offers the opportunity to specialize in botany. Someone with a master’s degree holder has more job opportunities and earns higher pay than a typical bachelor’s degree.

Skills required to become a great botanist

Great botanists possess skills beyond their education. Anyone interested in becoming a botany should possess or learn these skills;

Research and analysis

Research is one of the essential jobs a botanist is required to handle efficiently. A botanist may need to observe the impact of the environment on the growth of a plant, for instance, or need to check the cause of a plant’s disease.

Scientific research needs to be unbiased. All variables are expected to be considered to be able to deduce the actual development and not report guesses.

Critical evaluation

Botanists are scientists. Scientists are reputed for being able to think outside of the box and not limit themselves to typical beliefs.

This is how humans discovered the earth is not flat but oval. Thinking beyond what is taught in school or read about is a skill required to be a successful botanist.

Communication

Botanists who specialize in applied botany must be able to communicate their vision and research progress in simple terms non-botanists can understand.

The ability to efficiently use this skill might be the major determining factor for a board to approve funds for a research project.

Writing

It is important to document research and observation for comprehensive scientific reports.

A botanist manager, for example, might be required by the management to write formal reports to update on a research project’s progress.

Other skills a botanist should possess include;

The different groups of plants differ greatly in structure.

Inferior plants have no organs or tissues. Algae belong to this group of plants. Their body is called the taproot, or thallus. The cells of the phloem in most cases have the same structure. The lack of cell specialization to perform certain functions – photosynthesis, absorption and carrying out of solutions, providing body strength – is due to the algae living in water. All or most of the cells of these plants are in the light and are capable of photosynthesis. In an aquatic environment, lower plants obtain nutrients by absorbing them with their entire body surface. Therefore, they have no need for rapid movement of substances through the body, and thus no need for a conductive system. Water density is high enough and lower plants do not have to hold their bodies upright and resist gravity, so they do not have developed mechanical tissues.

Higher plants have functionally different organs formed by specialized cells. Higher plants include mosses and vascular plants – fern-like plants, clavate plants, holosperms, and angiosperms.

Most of the higher plants live on land. They obtain water and mineral nutrition from the soil and must rise above the soil surface to carry out photosynthesis. Therefore, higher plants have developed tissues responsible for the movement of substances between parts of the organism (conductive tissue) and for the strength and support of the terrestrial part (mechanical and covering tissues).

The presence of specialized cells, tissues, and organs allowed higher plants to reach large sizes and master all habitats. Many representatives of higher plants have reverted to water. On land and in freshwater reservoirs, they make up the bulk of the vegetation.

Plant life forms
A life form is the external aspect of a plant. Plants have four main life forms: trees, shrubs, bushes, and grasses.

A tree is a perennial plant with one large, woody trunk. Examples: spruce, apple tree, oak, palm tree.

A shrub is a plant with multiple, small, woody trunks, and usually does not live more than 10-20 years. Examples: hawthorns, snowballs, currants, raspberries.

Shrub – a low-growing perennial plant with single, woody trunks, up to 40 cm in height. Examples: blueberries, cranberries, heather.

Grasses, or herbaceous plants, are plants with green above-ground shoots that die off annually. Grasses can be annual (e.g., cornflower, chamomile), biennial (carrots, cabbage), and perennial (dandelion, clover). Biennial and perennial grasses have new shoots growing out of their wintering buds in the spring.

Undetermined growth. Some varieties have indeterminate growth, up to and including death. This applies to perennial plants. While certain organs in plants have deterministic growth, there is no period of negative growth.
Fixed lifestyle. The fixed lifestyle is characteristic of plants, due to the way they absorb moisture and obtain nutrients. It is through the roots that water penetration occurs. In order to put down roots, it needs to establish itself in the soil.
Photosynthesis. The ability to absorb carbon, sunlight and produce the oxygen that humans need.
Feed on dissolved inorganic substances by absorption. Starch as the main nutrient.
Cell Structure. Has a special cell structure. There are no centrioles, the cell wall is made of cellulose, and includes green plastids, as well as a large central vacuole surrounded by a tonoplast.

Among the variety of species, two main classifications can be distinguished:

Vascular. There are organs, special tissues, and vessels through which mineral salt dissolved in water moves, as well as sieve-like tubes that conduct organic matter.

Nonvascular. Consists of xylem and phloem. Possess simple tissues with a special function for the internal transport of water.

Basic species
The plant kingdom can be divided into two main groups: higher and lower. The lower ones have no organs and tissues, while the higher ones have both.

The lower ones include algae: green algae, brown algae and red algae.

The higher ones are divided into spore and seed algae. Spore plants include mosses, ferns, horsetails, and clay plants. Seminal: Holosperms, coatsundews.

The lower ones tend to live in water. And the higher ones need developed tissues just to get minerals from the soil and to carry out photosynthesis. With special cells, tissues, and organs, plants have mastered different habitats, and some have even returned to water.

Cruciferous. This category includes organisms that are pollinated by insects. It includes approximately three thousand organisms. Virtually all species of grasses are included in this category. Among the most prominent representatives are white cabbage.

Rosaceae. Counts about three thousand representatives. A distinguishing feature is the leaflets. Common plants, examples: plums, wild apple, rose.

Solanaceae. Fruits with a capsule or berry. Contains more than two thousand species. Potato and tomato, for example.

Cereals. One of the most common. Includes more than ten thousand species. Examples: wheat, bamboo, cane.

Gourds. A flowering plant with just over six hundred species. Examples: pumpkin, cucumber, watermelon.

Onions. Perennial herbs. Onions are loved throughout the world, with the exception of Australia. Prominent representatives: onions, ramson, leeks.

Pines. Leaves in the shape of spirals. Trees are monoecious. Examples: spruce, cedar fir.

Cypress. Interestingly, female cones are larger than male cones. Widespread throughout most of the globe. Examples: cypress, juniper, sequoia.

Complexiflowered. Counts twenty-seven thousand species. Broad in application: from ornamental purposes to the production of goods. Examples: sunflower, apothecary chamomile, ragweed.

Lilacs. Pollination by insects and wind. There are more than four thousand representatives of the species. Examples: lily, cankerwort, clintonia.

Aquaria. For the most part originally grew in the tropics. Now used in the decoration of aquariums. Examples: anubias, ammania gracilis, barclaya longifolia.

Carnivores. Perhaps the most interesting category. They feed on insects and small animals, not sunlight. Examples: venus flycatcher, cephalot, roridula.
